Education

Learning is a major part of the 2026 NCSS Conference & Tradeshow. With the profession transforming faster than ever, this year’s education lineup will focus on new tools, smarter technology, and modern challenges facing surveyors in the field. Whether you’re a PLS, crew chief, technician, or student, the sessions are designed to help you sharpen skills, explore innovations, and earn valuable PDHs while staying ahead of the changes shaping our industry.

Thursday’s education lineup delivers a deep dive into the technologies reshaping modern surveying. You’ll explore how AI is advancing feature extraction, quality control, and data analysis; gain clarity on how Building Information Modeling (BIM) is influencing surveying workflows; learn how SUE is applied in modern project environments; and review Real-World Case Studies showing how today’s tools integrate to improve accuracy, efficiency, and project outcomes. It’s a focused, future-driven day designed to keep you current with the evolving demands of the profession.

  • “Artificial Intelligence for Surveyors” by Doug Suttles
Learn practical AI applications that enhance your surveying workflows while maintaining professional standards. This hands-on course covers AI tools for data processing, documentation, client communications, and integration with modern technologies like UAS and LiDAR.
  • “BIM for Surveyors: Understanding Its Impact and Applications” by Kris Nixon
Gain a clear understanding of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and its growing influence on surveying. This overview explains what BIM is, how it’s used, and the specific ways it impacts surveying deliverables, coordination, and project integration.
  • “SUE Tools and Techniques” by Sully Gibbs
This session offers an overview of the tools currently used in Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE), including ground penetrating radar (GPR) technologies, electromagnetic designation equipment, and sketching tools. Attendees will gain a basic understanding of how these tools work, as well as how SUE data may be gathered and incorporated into project workflows.
  • “Integrating Modern Tools: Case Studies in Real-World Surveying” by Shane Strickland and David Turner
Explore how multiple technologies and traditional methods come together to support efficient, accurate project delivery. Through practical case studies, this session illustrates coordinated workflows, lessons learned, and the real-world strategies surveyors use to integrate modern tools across a variety of project types.

Friday offers a well-rounded lineup of education, giving you several short courses to tailor your learning. Sessions include the New Datum Changes, the latest ALTA Updates, practical insights into Hydrographic Surveying, and learn where SLAM Scanning offers fast, flexible data collection. The day concludes with “Experience Meets Innovation: A Technology Panel“, an interactive Q&A where seasoned professionals discuss how they are incorporating emerging tools into everyday practice, providing useful takeaways for both field and office.

  • “New Datum” by Gary Thompson
This short course provides a practical overview of the upcoming changes to the National Spatial Reference System. Attendees will learn how it differs from existing frameworks, what impacts to expect in mapping, positioning, and everyday surveying workflows, and how to prepare for the transition through adjustments to workflows, data management, and project coordination.
  • “ALTA Standards Update ” by Steve Amos
This session provides a clear overview of the recent updates to the ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey Standards. Attendees will learn what has changed and how the new requirements affect survey deliverables. The focus is on understanding the key revisions and applying them accurately in current practice.
  • “Hydrographic Surveying for Land Surveyors” by Jared Lambert & Gabriella DeOlivera
This session offers a high-level overview of hydrographic surveying—mapping underwater terrain and features using technologies like single beam and multibeam echosounders, side scan sonar, magnetometer, sub bottom, Inertial Motion Unit, and autonomous vehicles. Participants will gain insight into how our hydrographic team operate in rivers, lakes, and coastal zones, and how the data is used to support industries such as navigation safety, dredging, marine construction, floodplain management, and environmental restoration.
A central theme is integration: how hydrographic data can complement and enhance conventional land surveys. The course covers practical workflows for merging bathymetric and topographic datasets, enabling seamless shoreline modeling, infrastructure planning, and boundary delineation. Emerging technologies such as autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs), bathy lidar, RTX, and cloud-based processing tools are also explored, equipping land surveyors with the knowledge to collaborate across disciplines and stay ahead in a rapidly evolving geospatial landscape.
  • “SLAM Scanning: Capabilities, Limitations, and Field Applications” by Joe Priestner
This session explores how SLAM LiDAR, Simultaneous Localization and Mapping combined with mobile LiDAR scanning, offers a fast, flexible, and cost-effective approach to modern data collection. We will examine how it compares to traditional methods, highlight where the technology excels, and discuss how surveying teams can use it to collect data efficiently, navigate challenging environments, and streamline field workflows.
  • “Experience Meets Innovation: A Technology Panel” – Moderator, Jeff Allen. As tools and technology continue to reshape the surveying profession, seasoned practitioners are finding new ways to adapt, evolve, and lead. This interactive roundtable brings together professionals who have successfully integrated modern tools—from AI and drones to bathymetric systems, SUE technologies, and more—into their daily workflows. Designed as an open Q&A, this session highlights real-world experiences, practical lessons learned, and forward-thinking strategies for navigating a rapidly changing technical landscape. Join us for a candid, insightful conversation on how experience and innovation work hand-in-hand to move the profession forward.

President’s Charity Choice

This year, our President-Elect, Shane Strickland, has selected the Alpha-gal Alliance Action Fund as our conference charity. The Action Fund focuses on advancing policies that support and protect individuals living with Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS), a serious allergic condition caused by tick bites that affects thousands of people across the Southeast.

Alpha-gal is a growing concern within the land surveying profession. Because surveyors spend a significant amount of time working in wooded, tick-prone environments, they experience higher rates of AGS than many other outdoor industries. Supporting this organization helps raise awareness, strengthens advocacy on behalf of those affected, and contributes to research and education efforts that directly benefit our members.

We will be collecting donations throughout the conference, and anyone, whether attending or not, is welcome to contribute. If you would like more information or would like to make a donation, please click the link below.
