Professional Land Survey Manager – Charlotte, NC

Overview
In order to support the growth of our Geomatics Business Unit, Merrick & Company is seeking an experienced individual to provide leadership and guidance over our Charlotte Survey Team. This position reports directly to the SE Regional Survey Manager and is based in our Charlotte, NC office. 

Duties

The primary duties include developing and expanding sales through new clients, coordinating with project managers and other business units for successful completion of surveying tasks. Lead both the office and field staffs, oversee the deployment of surveying technology, and grow the survey practice at Merrick throughout the Charlotte area. 

Reporting directly to the Survey Manager position is the following:

  • Survey Technician Team
  • Field Survey Team

The ideal candidate for this operational leadership position will have the following key essential functions and responsibilities:

  • Support Merrick's Project Managers and project teams with project cost estimates, responsiveness, in providing high quality surveying services.
  • Expanding the utilization of surveying resources in the Charlotte market.
  • Develop technology and utilization strategies which keep Merrick on the leading-edge of the applied and profitable use of surveying technology.
  • Provide hands-on knowledge and coordinate the processes and procedures used in all Merrick survey operations.
  • Monitor financial status of survey projects and tasks (hours and dollars), in completion of Earned Value reporting.
  • Submit client invoices on a predefined basis in coordination with project controls and project managers.
  • Develop and monitor project specific quality assurance plans.
  • Develop a network of clients, teaming partners, and influencers within the surveying, geospatial, and engineering communities.
  • Create a Sales/Marketing Plan for each submarket area (i.e. energy, transportation, water resources, utility, etc.).
  • Participate in related professional societies, conferences, economic development organizations, etc. to establish Merrick as a service provider leader of choice.
  • Actively participate in writing proposals, pricing projects, review of contract terms & conditions, and contract negotiations, as necessary. 

Key Responsibilities

The successful Survey Manager will have the following combination of qualifications, skills and attributes:

  • At least ten (10) years of corporate experience in diverse surveying environments, with at least five (5) years in a leadership role over technical production and administrative controls.
  • Existing relationships with Charlotte area clients.
  • Ability to build relationships and work across many multiple functional departments. Can diplomatically delegate responsibility within the organization.
  • Experience using Autodesk 3-D Civil CADD and related software.
  • Ability to effectively present information to subordinates, customers, and the Merrick management team.
  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills.

Required Experience

  • North Carolina Professional Land Surveyor License
  • Management of 1-3 crews plus support office staff.
  • Business development and operations experience of $1-3 million in revenue.
  • Proven ability to strategically grow a surveying office.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, a good driving record, and be insurable under Merrick’s insurance carrier.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Certifications

  • NC Professional surveyor license required.
  • Additional Professional surveyor licenses encouraged.

This position serves as a vital member of the Survey Group in the division of Construction, Survey, and Utilities in the General Services Department. The position organizes and coordinates the work of a survey party to perform design surveys, construction staking and computations, and boundary and control surveys.
 
The work involves establishing location information; performing as-built and boundary surveys; researching deeds, right of way and easement documents; construction staking and associated calculations; generating field topographic surveys; utility locations; and using AutoCAD to depict the data gathered and to generate staking points for construction layout.

Part-Time Instructor / Geomatics Program

Primary Purpose of Position      
The Department of Built Environment is accepting applications for two Part-Time Instructors for the Geomatic Program. Part-Time Instructors are hired on a semester-by-semester basis to teach courses in Geomatics/Land Surveying delivered by the Built Environment Department’s Geomatics program. The Department is currently looking for two candidates to teach a two course sequence in 1) Automated Surveying and Mapping (Fall) and Residential Subdivision Design (Spring); 2) Satellite Positioning (Fall) and Geodesy (Spring). Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: teaching online courses, willingness to participant in Learning Management Systems training, participating in data collection and assessment of student learning for ABET, and submitting teaching materials as part of semester review. Candidates will work closely with the Geomatics Coordinator for assessments as well as faculty with subject matter expertise.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Built Environment supports over 175 undergraduate majors in the programs of Construction Management, Environmental Health and Safety and, Geomatics. The courses taught in the Geomatics program area are at the undergraduate level and include Automated Surveying and Mapping, Residential Subdivision Design, Geodesy and Satellite Positioning.

Minimum Requirements
Candidates must have a Master’s degree in Geomatics or related discipline at time of application with five years’ experience in the profession of land surveying or related field. Sequence 1 requires experience in using AutoCAD Civil 3D for residential design and experience in designing subdivisions. Sequence 2 requires experience in using GNSS equipment and basic geodetic techniques.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education 
Candidates with Master’s Degree and 5 years professional experience and with background in Geomatics or related discipline. Professional licensure is preferred.
