This full-time general laborer role will be assisting survey operations in the field as a rod person under the direction of a Survey Crew Chief or a Survey Instrument Operator. Primary responsibilities include driving metal and wood stakes, holding survey rod, and ensuring that survey supplies and equipment are prepared for the survey tasks at hand. May perform maintenance of certain equipment and maintain adequate supplies and carry supplies from the truck to the survey site. Will be given direction and will assist with other various field duties in the process of data collection. 

Successful candidates will have a high school diploma or equivalent. Qualified candidates must possess: 

  • Strong work ethic and dependability.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision when necessary.
  • Ability to retain and follow verbal instructions.
  • Consistent punctuality and superb attendance.
  • Ability to work in a teaming environment.
  • Stamina to work in a physically demanding position all day and in all types of weather.
  • Willing to travel occasionally during the week, home by weekend. 

This position is physically demanding so candidate must: 

  • The ability to work out of doors all year in all types of weather conditions the majority of the workday.
  • Be able to maneuver over rough, uneven terrain, ditches, roadsides, etc., while carrying 40- 50 lbs. of supplies or robotic equipment weighing 35 lbs.
  • Be able to work up to 10-12 hours per day for 6-8 months of the year.
  • Be capable of using small hand tools and power tools, such as a 12-lb. sledgehammer to pound wooden stakes or metal pins into the ground. Be able to hammer up 2 hours to 8 hours per workday.
  • Be able to withstand bending and squatting while hammering stakes, setting up equipment and/or clearing vegetation. Bending, twisting, and manual dexterity required.
  • Be able to lift and set aside 60-100-lb. manholes using manhole hooks.
  • Be capable of using a machete, brush hook, orother tool to cut light brush.
  • Be capable of wearing hearing protection when working near heavy traffic and highways, hardhat if required, and clothing appropriate for the weather. No short pants allowed.
  • Must participate in an on-going drug-testing program.
  • Ability to walk and/or stand the majority of the day.
  • Must be able to drive and have a clean driving record.

Position Summary

Description of Duties:
Performs skilled computer-aided mapping and surveying and performs record keeping as it relates to municipal engineering; does related work as required. Produces and maintains municipal maps and records. Assists the City Surveyor in performing various surveys such as property, topographic, and construction surveys. Reviews subdivision plats, street construction plans, and building permits for compliance with specific municipal ordinances. Department work is directed by the city engineer.

Responsibilities: 
Maintains computer and hardcopy maps and lists relating to water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, floodplain, city limits, street lights, cemetery, zoning, easements, and others; assists in surveying by running instruments, taking field notes, computing closure, pulling chain, holding rod, driving stakes; operates GPS equipment, total station, data collector, automatic level, plotter, distance measuring instrument; makes lettering and graphic illustrations of signs, charts, graphs, and diagrams; locates city cemetery plots; orders department office supplies; provides information and responds to requests from public and private agencies including other city departments and the general public.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities: 
Extensive knowledge of computer-aided mapping, land surveying, and related software and equipment; knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing software; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D and Topcon equipment and software preferred. 

Physical Requirements: 
Work in this class is medium and requires good physical endurance.  Physical activity will include but is not limited to stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, and speaking normally.  The employee is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold; traffic and construction site hazards; and may be exposed to atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system such as fumes and dust.  The employee must have the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, read a computer terminal, and use fine measurement devices.

Desirable Education and Experience: 
Graduation from high school; any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate degree in surveying, engineering, or drafting; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.  

Special Requirements: 
North Carolina Driver License.  Must possess certification as a Surveyor Intern (SI) or be eligible to sit for and obtain such certification from the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors within six-month probationary period.

ESP is looking for a self-motivated individual to join ESP’s Geospatial team and assist in the production of products derived from aerial Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) and photogrammetric systems. This includes the nation’s first statewide project utilizing Geiger-mode technology. The successful candidate will be responsible for the production of aerial LiDAR point cloud deliverables and derivative products as well as quality control reviews of internal and external deliverables. Position is on night shift hours which are currently scheduled as follows:

  • Night shift work days – Sunday night through Thursday night
  • Night shift hours: 12a - 8a
